Last week, a minuscule comment from Anne Thompson led to Latino Review bursting out with a scoop they claimed was true -- that Warner Bros. would not be inviting Brandon Routh back to star in the next solo Superman flick, currently titled The Man of Steel. In her article, Thompson claimed that Bryan Singer would most likely not direct the film since he was too busy working on other projects, and that the next time we see the Superman character he would be part of the much-hyped Justice League of America.
Cue AICN flying in to the rescue. According to the site, a "very high-ranking mole who is absolutely in a position to know what's happening with this film" said that whole Brandon Routh rumor was "absolutely false." That as of right now, Warner Bros. still wants Routh to return to the role, if and when another solo flick gets up and running. AICN tells us this is based on conversations as recent as a few weeks ago. One thing that's not mentioned, however, is whether Singer would return as director. Valkyrie is all but wrapped, and The Mayor of Castro Street shouldn't take that long to piece together. So if they plan to shoot this Superman film in, say, 2009 (for a summer 2010 release), then I don't see a problem with Singer making that schedule. Then again, perhaps the studio would rather someone else come in and take the reigns.
Me? I don't care ... so long as Routh wears less make-up and bulks up a little more. I want the manly man version of Supes this time, not the teenage girl version. You?

Ok before I begin let me acknowledge those who hate people who hated the Supes movie...
There. Now on to my point. Routh could have used some time in the gym, no doubt about it Erik. But I liked him as Superman. The big problem they have here, is how bad they messed up the last one. One word: Superbaby. Two words: Kryptonite Island? Three words: Suspend your disbelief. Clark Kent goes missing for the entire last 30 minutes or so of the movie, no one bothered to ask, where the hell is Clark Kent. More plot missteps than Kelsey Grammer at a cocktail party. But I digress.
Bring back Routh. Let Singer continue doing whatever he's gonna be doing in the summer of '09. Which, hopefully, is not another hero movie.

I can't be the only one who liked Superman Returns, and loved Routh in the Superman role, can I? To be fair, I'm only vaguely aware of Superman's comic roots, and perhaps others are judging against that. But I thought he was "beefy" enough (though more can't hurt - Herculean would be fine), and the story/acting/camp was actually all quite good. It's a *comic* movie, for crissakes.
I'd love anohter.

Sounds like the rumor was floated by the studio to gauge fan reaction to a cape without Routh in it. Judging from the forums I'm on, Routh won't be missed, although personally I thought he did an excellent job as Superman. SR is in a way a grandiose kind of folly - beautiful to look at, emotionally resonant in some places, but marred by a duff script and a very silly final hour.

I loved Superman Returns and I loved Routh as Superman. Herculean would be awful. Superman was never designed to look that big ... his power is supposed to come from our sun, not from huge muscles. Ok, sorry about that nerdgasm. I couldn't help it.

If the studio keeps trying to "re-boot" this franchise, it's gonna crash like an overheated PC.
Why can't someone just be patient and stop with all the different incarnations and focus on a good stand alone flick??
I liked Routh as Superman and agree that the issues with Superman Returns revolved more around plot holes and uninspiring Villain. Who else is tired of Lex? Superman needs to face a real threat...not Kal Penn.

I also liked Superman Returns and Routh was fine in the lead. I also liked Kate Bosworth. The film really was better than the Chris Reeve films, which were good for their time. But come on, that Superman-catching-the-plane set peice was worth the price of admission. The end did drag on too long but this movie showed Superman still has potential. Pick up the pace a bit, and remove a bit of the angst between Superman and Lois, and the sequel will be better.
