-- Will Watchmen hit theaters on March 6th, as scheduled, or will those evil demons at 20th Century Fox prevent fans from seeing their beloved film on time simply because they hate human beings and everything they stand for? Okay, maybe there's a little more to it, but good news is both sides have agreed to let a judge settle this on January 20th. It's complicated, but we'll know then whether the film will arrive on time or not.
-- Our friends over at io9 came across a few images of early concept art for that new Judge Dredd flick (see them below). These come from comic artist Jock, who also worked on Losers, 2000 A.D and Green Arrow: Year One. The images are all tagged with the name Rebellion, which is the company behind the 2003 Dredd video game, and is also producing the new film.
-- The ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) have dished out their nominations for best of the year, with nods going to Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire (my choice) and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
A brand spanking new Japanese Watchmen trailer has arrived online, featuring a good chunk of fresh scenes not included in any of the other trailers or behind-the-scenes videos. Surprisingly, it's heavy on the Nixon stuff for some reason while also highlighting Fidel Castro, JFK and the threat of nuclear war. The domestic trailers, however, barely showed these political leaders -- instead focusing more on the superhero/action aspect of the film -- which just goes to show the different ways they're marketing this flick to audiences all over the globe. The release date of March 28th at the end is, in fact, limited to Japan, so don't go freaking out yet -- Fox hasn't managed to delay our March 6th release, and if they want Wolverine to be successful with the fanboy community, they'll find a way to work this sucker out and allow Watchmen to hit theaters on time. But enough of my babbling, check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.
Cinematical has gotten their hands on the first official image from Judd Apatow'sFunny People, which yours truly recently named the comedy of the year. Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman star in this flick about a comedian who suffers a near-death experience. This is only Apatow's third time in the director's chair (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up), despite the fact that his name has been attached to a slew of comedies over the past couple years. On his latest, Apatow notes: "I'm trying to make a very serious movie that is twice as funny as my other movies. Wish me luck!" For more on the comedies of 2009, check out our discussion post over here. Best comedy of 2009? Maybe. Most anticipated? Definitely. Funny People hits theaters on July 31.
Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Sunshine Cleaning, starring Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Alan Arkin. The film follows a down-on-her-funds mom (Adams) who, in order to raise money to send her son to private school, listens to the advice of her father (Arkin) and starts up a crime scene cleaning business with her sister (Blunt). Adams and Blunt together seems like a recipe for success, and advanced buzz on the film -- which comes to us from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine -- is pretty positive so far. Directed by Christine Jeffs and written by Megan Holley (nice female duo at the top there), Sunshine Cleaning hits theaters on March 13th.
Cinematical has just received this exclusive clip from the film Taken, starring Liam Neeson as a former spy who must use his old skills when his estranged daughter is kidnapped and forced into the slave trade. Taken is director Pierre Morel's follow-up to the fun and exhilarating District B13, and with a script from both Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, you know you're in store for a little action. In fact, advance buzz on this flick is extremely positive -- so much so that some websites are questioning the late January release date. Personally, I think it's fine to release a good film in January or February. Heck, if it's a great flick, does it really matter when it's released? Last I checked, people were still willing to go to the movies in the middle of winter when it's freezing out and there's nothing better to do.
So bring on Taken this January 30th -- I'm officially stoked to see it!
Check out a preview of the merchandising terror that awaits us this summer when Terminator: Salvation hits theaters. While I would like to think they're rough prototypes, they look pretty darn finished ... and wow -- these remind me of the action figures we had back in the 80s, the ones that looked absolutely nothing like Harrison Ford or Mark Hamill. I thought today's children were going to be safe from that kind of disappointment.
As bad as they are (are those happy cyborgs?), there's actually a little Sam Worthington spoiler involved in the next set, which I'm including after the jump. As Slashfilm notes, it's not technically a spoiler if you were watching the trailer and putting two and two together, and the marketing will probably let it slip anyway. But just in case, I'm putting the next photos after the jump -- and then including our Terminator: Salvation gallery so you can remember what Christian Bale actually looks like. That is supposed to be Bale, right?
During the Chargers vs. Colts playoff game yesterday, NBC was airing commercials advertising a 3D trailer for the movie Monsters vs. Aliens (first of its kind?), which will also coincide with the airing of a full episode of the TV show Chuck in 3D. The trailer will arrive at the end of the 2nd quarter of the Superbowl, and yes -- you'll have to pick up a pair of 3D glasses to watch it. Apparently, these 3D glasses -- which will be just like the ones you wore growing up, with one side red and the other blue, will be available at select Pepsi and Sobe kiosks leading up to the big game. No word on where these special kiosks are located, but I'm sure there will be a formal announcement and/or a website with exact details coming very soon.
Is it a fun gimmick that'll give folks something to look forward to during the Superbowl? Yes, definitely. People like little things like this, especially the ones who have kids and host big game day parties. But does it show the world how far we've come in the advancement of 3D technology? Not really. These will probably be the same glasses I wore to watch 1991's Nightmare on Elm Street 6. Then again, maybe it's about getting people used to the idea of 3D again -- bringing it into their homes, seeing how far they'll go to buy the glasses on their own, etc ... What do you think? Is this something we should be excited about?

Year One - in theaters June 19 When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.
So the first trailer for Crank 2: High Voltage has hit the internets, and the thing is beyond NSFW (not safe for work). It opens with Asian men performing some sort of weird surgery on Jason Statham (who's awake and watching), then leaps into a montage of foul-mouthed obscenities before introducing a character who apparently likes to spend his days slapping the bare behind of an African American woman -- and then we get action, guns, blood, sex, nudity, more cursing and then Amy Smart shows up. Phew. Watching it felt like riding a dangerous rollercoaster through a porn factory.
Needless to say, this is probably the dirtiest and filthiest trailer of the year -- and I kinda like how it's arrived on December 31st. Crank 2, written and directed by those freaks Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, picks up where the original Crank left off and follows a man whose heart has been stolen by a Chinese mobster and replaced with a battery-powered heart that needs jolts of electricity to keep working. We've posted the trailer after the jump, because it's ... just ... nasty. You've been warned ...

It's finally time for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to make some noise, and while all of us slowly awake from our holiday daze, Empire Magazine has released the first official images from the film, while USA Todayhas a report from the set. Above, in a photo from Empire, Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox dodge explosions during what has to be some sort of snazzy robot battle.
From USA Today: This time, the story finds Sam and Mikaela under attack by the evil Decepticons because of something Sam has learned about the origins of the Transformers and their ancient history on Earth. To acquire this knowledge, the invading Decepticons need to capture Sam instead of kill him. Meanwhile, the U.S. military and an international coalition has united with the good-guy Autobots to fight back the villains' attack. Some of the most important newcomers are in the robot cast: Decepticons Soundwave, a fearsome communications expert, and Devastator, whose arms and legs are built out of other Transformers. And on the Autobots' side is Jetfire, a villain whose age and broken-down physicality leads him to help the Autobots."

The first trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li is now online, and although it's the Japanese version (which would explain the non-English voiceover), it still looks like a half-decent fighting flick. And, I mean, c'mon -- what else are you looking for out of a film like Street Fighter? Are there lots of badass fights in the streets? According to this trailer, yes. Good. Done. Satisfied.
Based on the popular video game (which you had to have played at some point in your life -- remember the one where you were feverishly tapping buttons, while your friends yelled "Dude, how did you do that roundhouse kick?" -- and you were all like, "I don't know, I'm just hitting the buttons as fast as I can!"), Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li follows, well, the legend of the female warrior Chun Li (Kristin Kreuk) as she sets out on a quest for justice ... or something like that. Look, just bring on the fights -- that's all we want.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li hits theaters on February 27th. Check out the trailer below, and look for an English-language preview to arrive real soon.
Here's a glimpse of the post-apocalyptic to send you off to holiday cheer. Two new Terminator: Salvation photos have leaked online and landed at /film and Film School Rejects from the mysterious Christopher M., but reportedly hail from Total Film Magazine. If you've been paying close attention to the concept art that has popped online, you'll know that John Connor is examining one of the hydrobots. Let's hope it's well and truly dead, and that Connor doesn't come away with a minced hand seconds later -- these things can supposedly attack via air or water. I'm not sure how humanity can win this one either, John.
The second photo is just a nice atmospheric one, featuring one of humanity's lone warriors facing the wreckage of a downed plane. The post-Judgment Day landscape still manages to produce lovely sunsets, at least. I was expecting this movie to take place in the perpetual darkness of the first Terminator, so it's reassuring to see nuclear winter hasn't actually set in. Both pictures (as well as the brand new poster) have been added to the gallery below, along with the concept art of the hydrobots.
I'm not sure it was well worth the wait for a behind-the-scenes photo like the one above, but I will admit it's very nice to see an actual image from James Cameron's Avatar that didn't leak online with a ton of "Is it real or is it fake?" baggage towing behind. The LA Times have debuted the first official image from the Titanic director's much-anticipated sci-fi epic, due in theaters on December 18, 2009, and it shows director James Cameron pointing at something while star Sam Worthington (wearing a backpack of some sorts, as well as something on his wrists) looks on. We're not entirely sure what set they're on, but it looks like the inside of a ship.
This digital 3-D flick (which is a mix of CGI and live action shot on special cameras developed by Cameron) tells of a paraplegic ex-marine war veteran (Worthington) who's sent to establish a human settlement on the distant planet of Pandora, but winds up in a battle against the planet's indigenous population, the Na'vi. Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana and Giovanni Ribisi also star. No word on when the first trailer will arrive (possibly in front of X-Men Origins: Wolverine or during the Oscars??), but one imagines we'll see more of Avatar within the next couple months.
Cinematical has just received this exclusive teaser poster for this summer's hotly-anticipated Land of the Lost, starring Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, Anna Friel and Jorma Taccone. Based on the classic television series, Land of the Lost was directed by Brad Silberling and follows a has-been scientist (Ferrell), a crack-smart research assistant (Friel) and a redneck survivalist (McBride) who get sucked through time and spit out into an alternate universe -- one that finds them running from dinosaurs and weird reptiles called Sleestaks, while trying to figure a way out of this hybrid dimension. Really looking forward to watching Ferrell and McBride pair up on screen together, and with the "alternate universe" angle thrown in, I'm sure we're in store for all sorts of ridiculousness.
Cinematical has received this exclusive final poster for Doubt, which proudly displays its many much-deserved award nominations. Based on the play by John Patrick Shanley (who also adapted and directed this big-screen version -- listen to our audio interview with him here), Doubt is exceptional because of its cast -- with all four players (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Viola Davis) turning in sharp, powerful performances. Set in the Bronx, New York in 1964, Doubt plunges right into the heart of a Catholic School and follows the two nuns who suspect a priest of making unwanted advances toward the school's first black student. Easily one of my favorite films of the year, this is definitely one you don't want to miss -- especially on a cold dark weekend in the middle of winter.
